Anthropic just signed its first Australian data-centre lease. The campus is Zerra's proposed Western Downs Digital Park, near Dalby — about 250 kilometres north-west of Brisbane. Papers put the full build in the thirty-billion range. Peak capacity talked about in the coverage: 2.16 gigawatts.
That is not a Toowoomba CBD story. It is a paddock next to high-voltage kit, gas plants, and the Braemar hub. ABC's earlier maths on the same park put full-build daily use in the same ballpark as adding a large slice of Queensland's electricity consumption.
The line you'll hear next
You'll hear that this deal puts energy into the grid and helps prices. That is the state's pitch — Premier Crisafulli's framing in the ABC and Brisbane Times coverage.
What the public file shows so far is different, and more useful to a commercial buyer:
- A long-term lease on a campus that is still in planning (council DA, FIRB, online from around 2027).
- Direct connection into the high-voltage grid, with customer-funded connection gear.
- On-site batteries described for power quality and stability — firming and smoothing, not free power.
- A path to power purchase agreements and new renewable capacity later.
- Reporting that phase one can lean on gas while that generation catches up.
Treat "more energy in than out" as a promise to watch, not a proven Anthropic engineering guarantee. Huge new load first. Generation story second. Fuel mix in between.
Why grid-connected businesses care
Most Australian businesses still buy power from the grid. Plenty of them also sell exports when the roof makes excess. A few already trade — wholesale-style access, peer-to-peer, Localvolts-style markets — instead of sitting on a flat retail tariff.
When a single tenant can move state demand that hard, every site still renting electrons lives downstream of that fight. Prices, congestion, and political deals around mega-loads show up in your bill whether your logo is on the DA or not.

Three clocks matter more than the press release:
- Council conditions on the Western Downs DA — water, connection, staging.
- FIRB and whether the lease survives the approval path.
- Which megawatts show up before the load — renewables under PPA, gas as bridge, or both.
Until those land, the commercial lesson is simple. Mega-loads are coming onto the Australian grid. Your site either sits on a dumb tariff and hopes, or it designs how it buys, sells, trades, and stores.
